CITY OF ANSONIA
“Copper City”
Public Civic Mural
Main Street
Downtown Center, Ansonia, Connecticut
I was asked to paint a mural in the city of Ansonia. The location is adjacent to City Hall and I decided to create a civic mural that paid homage to it’s history as a clock making city. I incorporated a metallic copper background to represent it’s moniker as the “Copper City” and researched Ansonia clock catalogs from the late 1800’s and reintroduced typefaces and era specific decorative borders. I chose to lay this painting out by hand, with a scaled 1:1 drawing and a yard stick and chose a simple 3 color pallette. Though not funded, nor sanctioned, by the city or approved by the community, the once neglegted site now serves as iconic destination that celebrates Ansonia’s industrious history.
